Salt and Light-Baptism Service-Apr. 15, 2012

Salt and Light-Baptism Service-April 15, 2012, 6pm

Matthew 5:13-16

In the context of a Baptism Service I think it is important to stress not only what is occurring at this time but also what we are to focus on going forward.  It is a wonderful and exciting time for these families to come to the day when their child acknowledges Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.  It is also a time for remembering and reflecting for those of us who have gone through the waters of rebirth known as baptism.  We are buried with Christ in death and raised to walk in a newness of life.  What does that walk look like, for them and for us.  As we look at this day, we acknowledge that we as a church have a responsibility to help them to grow and mature in Christ, their parents also share in this responsibility, and as they grow to maturity in Christ they too will take more responsibility for their own faith, and finally in helping to disciple others.

13Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 5:13-16 (K.J.V.)

The message will be brief and to the point.  Salt is used as a preservative to cure meat, and to add flavor.  Light is to provide the bearer of the light means to see in dark places.   Be Salt.  Share the message of Christ with others that they may be preserved or saved for his glory that their lives would be pleasing or favorable in the sight of the Lord.  Be Light.  A light poorly used is ineffective at best, and close to be snubbed out in the worst scenario.  The light needs to be in the open to be a benefit, putting it under a bowl will make no use of the light and could possible go out if it runs out of air.  Being Salt and Light are so that others may see and glorify your Father which is in heaven.   Believers, Church, Parents, and those newly baptized.  In a world that only practices self-preservation and has grown dark and tasteless, be salt and light.
