Background: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

Focal: 1 Thessalonians 5:4-5, 11

You are not in darkness for that day to surprise you. In Advent we are looking expectantly for the coming of Christ. We celebrate the coming of Christ at his birth. We are also to remain watchful as those who are children of light for Christ’s return. Do you look with expectation to the day when Christ will return?

It won’t surprise those who have been waiting for Christ. Scripture says, you are all children of light (his), children of the day. It was what we were born again for, to be his children of light in places of darkness and hopelessness. We are to serve as a reminder of the hope, light, and live we have in Christ Jesus.

Many times we mistakenly believe that waiting is the same thing as doing nothing. This could not be further from the truth. We are to be actively waiting, preparing for his arrival, spreading light his light that we may not fall into darkness. Also we are to encourage one another and build one another up.

There are many discouraging things in the world, but our brothers and sisters should not be one of them. Encourage and build one another up. Jesus in on his way, don’t lose hope, ‘for you are all children of light.’
